Preserving the Beauty: A Guide to Caring for Leather Products
Leather products have a timeless elegance and enduring quality, but like all things, they require proper care to maintain their beauty and longevity.
1. Regular Cleaning Use a soft, damp cloth to gently wipe away surface dust and dirt. For tougher stains, a mild leather cleaner works well — the best I’ve found is Angelus Leather Balm (good cleaner and conditioner in one). Fiebings also makes a solid line. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Never use on suede.
2. Conditioning Apply a quality leather conditioner with a soft cloth in a circular motion. Allow it to penetrate, then buff off the excess. Do this periodically depending on use and climate.
3. Protection from Moisture If leather gets wet, blot gently with a dry cloth and air dry away from direct heat. For added protection, use a water repellent spray designed for leather.
4. Storage Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use dust bags to protect from scratches. Don’t overcrowd — prevents creasing and deformation.
5. Handling with Care Avoid overstuffing wallets or bags. When not in use, stuff handbags with tissue paper to retain shape.
6. Professional Maintenance For stubborn stains or repairs, a professional leather cleaner or cobbler has the tools to address complex issues and extend the life of your goods.
Follow some or all of this — or just let your leather develop a rad patina. Either way works.
